Sculptural stringer stairs | EVF

2019, Göppingen

The impressive stringer stairs in the Energieversorgung Filstal Göppingen building impress visitors thanks to their extraordinary play of colors and modern LED lighting.

Curved stringer stairs

The administration building of Energieversorgung Filstal in Göppingen (EVF), which was completed in 2020, impresses with its cubic, clear form. Floor-to-ceiling glazing conveys openness and transparency. In addition to office and seminar rooms, the interior of the building also houses a modern customer center, exhibition areas and a training kitchen. The sketch was created by the renowned architectural firm blocher partners from Stuttgart.

Stringer stairs as a special eye-catcher

The sculptural, evenly rounded stringer stairs by METALLART are the highlight of the inviting new building and connect the ground floor with the upper floor. The METALLART experts installed a modern light cove in the upper area of the inner and outer balustrade stringers. The client fitted an LED strip inside the light cove. This LED strip illuminates the 24 steps of the impressive, single-flight stringer stairs and creates an atmospheric appearance for the steel staircase. The pure light cove opening on the underside is only approx. 25 mm. On the outer stringer, a rectangular handrail made of European oak creates a harmonious contrast to the black lacquered, parapet-high railing. The layered gluing of the wooden handrail guarantees the greatest possible stability. Holz-Hacker supported us as a partner company in the construction of this staircase element.

Project details

  • diameter inner cheek: 900 mm
  • outer stringer diameter: 4,100 mm
  • usable flight width of the stringer stairs: up to 1,440 mm
  • stainless steel tread edge protection
  • tread construction: Combined folding structure/trough tread
  • gradients: 25 pieces
  • landing: 1 piece, landing with an area of approx. 4 - 5 step treads
  • stringer thickness: approx. 15 - 20 mm or according to stat. requirements
  • stringer height: approx. 1,400 - 1,450 mm

For the second floor, the specialists at METALLART designed an all-glass railing made of laminated safety glass/ESG panes, which was set into a flat steel frame on the floor side. This railing solution impresses with maximum transparency and ensures a light-flooded interior design. Similar to the handrail of the stringer stairs, the wooden handrail of the all-glass railings is also made of fine "European oak". It was attached and glued to the top.

  • statically load-bearing, smooth-surfaced soffit cladding made of sheet steel
  • METALLART welded the steel sheets flush with the surface between the stringers on the underside to precisely match the staircase design
  • significantly improved statics and optimized vibration behavior of the stringer stairs
  • guaranteed prevention of cracking:
    • no GK lining,
    • no full-surface filling and
    • no acrylic grouting to stair stringers

  • the verifiable structural analysis for the stringer stairs and the glass railings
  • a vibration analysis for the sculptural stairs
