Parapet-high stringer staircase in the five-star-plus hotel | The Fontenay
2018, Hamburg
In March 2018, entrepreneur Klaus-Michael Kühne opened the five-star-plus hotel The Fontenay, which is currently one of "The Leading Hotels of the World", in Hamburg's Rotherbaum district on the west bank of the Outer Alster. METALLART designed an impressive steel stringer staircase for this building. With 130 rooms and suites with the highest quality furnishings in a classic modern style, an infinity pool on the roof with a view of the Alster and a wellness oasis, the luxury accommodation promises relaxation at the highest level.
Impressive steel stringer staircase
Behind the unusual design of the building is the renowned architectural firm Störmer Murphy and Partners GmbH, also from Hamburg: between the three curving interconnected circles are green patios that transport nature into the interior of the superior hotel. But it is not only the floor plan that is organically curved. In addition to numerous individually crafted pieces of furniture, the steel stringer staircase and the glass railings by METALLART in the piano bar also impress with their rounded design and imposing shape.

Project details
The single-flight steel stringer staircase with a flight width of 1,500 mm, which was manufactured in compliance with the currently applicable DIN standards, blends harmoniously into the cozy ambience of the room. With a thickness of 10-15mm, the flat steel stringers on both sides of the steel stringer staircase are stable railings, onto which METALLART fitted a rectangular handrail in wenge. Combined folding structure/box treads made of approx. 5-6 mm thick sheet steel were used as the tread construction for the steel stringer staircase. METALLART insulated the resulting cavity, which was created by closing the tread and riser area of the steel stringer staircase, with mineral wool. The structurally supporting steel soffit lining, which was dimensioned and executed in accordance with structural requirements, gives the steel stringer staircase its sculptural character.
The experts manufactured the steel stringer staircase with the utmost precision and know-how in compliance with the currently applicable DIN standards. In order to be able to realize the client's wishes with regard to the rounded glass railings, the general test certificate of the German building authorities came into play. The submission of the test certificate to the structural engineer or the responsible building authority brought numerous advantages for the customer: no need for
- approval in individual cases (ZiE),
- Fees of the responsible testing office for ZiE,
- any necessary bending/tensile tests,
- any necessary glass breakage tests and
- any necessary expert opinions
The evenly rounded, horizontal glass railings in the piano bar give guests a view into the atrium of the luxury hotel, while the living room is also a meeting place for entertainment. In addition to the modern design of the steel staircase, the all-glass railings are another highlight. To minimize the green cast, the staircase construction experts designed it in white glass. An approx. 35 x 17 mm filigree stainless steel U-section at a height of 1,400 mm above the FFB serves as a handrail, which was attached and glued to the laminated safety glass panes on the top. The laminated safety glass/ESG panes themselves have a length of 2,000mm and are 16-20mm thick. A total of around 31 running meters were installed.
A special feature in addition to the steel stringer staircase with steel soffit lining is the glass pocket made of welded U-section to hold the glass. For this purpose, a flat steel ring was attached horizontally on the outside/top, which in turn received a rolled, vertical steel sheet to hold the plasterboard lining provided by the customer.
